VISALIA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Unit: Classified JOB DESCRIPTIONS Issue No. 3 Date: 03-97 Page 1 of 2 Section: Operations and Transportation Services Job Title: CUSTODIAN III - LEAD CREWPERSON RANGE: 54 OPERATIONS II Under the supervision of the Operations Department Director, Custodial Supervisor and Central Head Custodian, perform the duties of a Custodian I, plus lead and direct a specific custodial team (team concept program) on a scheduled route to a number of school sites. Provide leadership and assist in training of new custodians. Typical Duties: 1. Lead a crew in the performance of their custodial duties including year round school track moves; 2. Supervise five to forty-five personnel in rotation of duties; 3. Contribute to evaluation of assigned personnel; 4. Provide instruction and training of new personnel; demonstrate proper methods and functions by example and knowledge of job; 5. Assist in determining work schedules and distribute appropriate time and materials to assure that the work is completed; 6. Safeguard campus property; ensure security at sites by locking up and setting alarm system; 7. In the absence of Site Custodian, perform general maintenance and watering tasks; 8. Drive Custodial Van with team members to and from job sites; 9. Maintain 2 way radio communications with Operations II Base and/or supervisor; 10. Perform duties of Custodian I as required; 11. Perform other related duties as assigned, i.e., stock truck, emergency equipment repair, etc. Personal Characteristics: Should possess personal characteristics generally recognized as essential for good public employees including integrity, initiative, emotional maturity, dependability, courtesy, good judgment, and ability to work cooperatively with others. Position Qualifications: Knowledge of: District custodial team concept policies and expectations; proper use of materials, equipment and methods used in custodial work; principles and techniques of training and supervision; work loads and scheduling; maintenance of power equipment; district alarm systems. Ability to: Use tools and equipment necessary to perform custodial work; perform satisfactorily as a leader of a custodial crew; provide instruction, training and give clear directions; inspect, correct, evaluate and provide written reports of work accomplished by crew members; understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Experience: One year of experience as a Gym and Locker Room Custodian/Range 44, or 1 yr as a Site Custodian 1 - Range 49 OR 2 years as a Custodian 1 - Range 43 OR 2 years equivalent experience in commercial or institutional team custodial cleaning concept. Education: High school diploma or equivalent. License Requirement: Valid California Driver License and be insurable by the district's liability insurance carrier. Physical Abilities/Environment: Physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of a position without hazard to themselves or others. Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend and twist, kneel, crawl and stoop for extended periods of time. Lift and move equipment and furniture weighing up to 75 pounds. Reach in all directions. Sit for brief periods of time. Adequate sight or corrected vision for the purpose of driving vehicle, reading labels, directions, procedures and other printed matter. Hear and understand speech at normal levels to communicate with coworkers and use 2 way radio. Possess dexterity of hands, fingers, arms, legs and feet to drive assigned vehicles and operate custodial equipment. Indoor and outdoor environment, subject to varying weather conditions.
